Inspiration

Putting design in its place means even a small space. n outport Newfoundland, sheds are small, typically wooden structures used to store fishing gear and tools, while providing a space to work. Sheds became a central, informal gathering place where people gathered to share stories, play music, and enjoy each other’s company. The shed was a part of a family's premises, a collection of buildings including homes, the shed, fishing stages and other outbuildings.

The Finefolk series, by Canadian designer Katrina Tompkins, are inspired by traditional work stools one might find in a shed and a part of our Premises Collection. The unpretentious aesthetics that prioritize utility and tranquility are as desirable in modern urban life as in a shed, and connect the experiences of Fogo Islanders to those who come from away.

Fabrication

Made using regionally sourced birch by our craftspeople at Fogo Island Workshops. Available in a range of finishes including hand-buffed Danish Oil, which deepens the amber colour of the wood, and White Oil, which neutralizes the amber tone for a raw matte look. Both absorb into the wood and richen the grain. A variety of coloured lacquers are available. .
