Held Over Water Quilt

Inspiration

Fogo Island has centuries-old traditions of quilting, knitting and rug hooking. These skills, born of necessity, have been passed across generations and tell stories of place. A new generation of quilters are taking the mantle and fusing the tradition of an economy of materials with new patterns that imbue a sense of meaning and story telling in their designs.

Held Over Water by Janet Langdon is a quilt that brings past and present together. Symbolic of the historic Newfoundland and Labrador culture of building houses, stages and stores on stilts. They protect against high waters, offer scenic vistas and allow buildings to hug the rocky shores. Stages are transitionary spaces between the land and the water, offering protection from the elements. Similarly, quilts provide a sense of security in their utilitarian warmth while providing beauty and design in our spaces.

While stages aren’t used as in the past the iconic stilts of the Fogo Island Inn help shore up opportunity up Fogo Islanders.

Fabrication

The complex quilt is made on Fogo and Change Islands by quilters with decades of passion and experience. The colours and patterns of the cotton material will vary as materials can be vintage or new remnants. All quilts come with a tag embroidered with the name of the maker who design and crafted it.

A bespoke option is available for those who want to be a part of the design process in selecting textiles and stitching. Upon receipt of your package, simply select your quilt's colour family, colour tone, weight, and a custom embroidered label. After receiving your selections, a member of our team will be in touch with you to finalize your fabric choices and discuss any further customization options to create your own one-of-a-kind heirloom quilt.
