Families were often big and boisterous in outport Newfoundland. Multiple generations piled into small rooms to dine, debate, dance, make music together, and lack of space was never a hindrance.
Dutch designer Ineke Hans reinterpreted the classic settee, a wooden daybed once found in kitchens and back rooms of many outport homes. for the context of Fogo Island Inn. The classic wooden spindles are split to create a comfortable flat surface for a body to rest and are a homage to the outport practice of taking old chair spindles and splitting them to decorate cabinetry when they were no longer useful.
Made using regionally sourced birch by our craftspeople at Fogo Island Workshops. Available in a range of finishes including hand-buffed Danish Oil, which deepens the amber colour of the wood, and White Oil, which neutralizes the amber tone for a raw matte look. Both absorb into the wood and richen the grain. A variety of coloured lacquers are available.
The optional, down-filled cushions use knitting patterns and techniques that were traditionally used to make insulated mittens and socks. This creates a seat as warm and steadfast as the knitter who made it.
