In Newfoundland, a "bridge" is an uncovered wooden platform at the door of a home. Often referred to outside of the province as a “deck” or “patio,” bridges are the connection between a door and the ground. They facilitate movement but are also informal gathering places – the perfect location for a boil-up or to enjoy friends’ company in the Fogo Island sunshine.
The small salt box houses of outport Newfoundland were tight on space but big on creating a welcoming and social home that brought people close together. The table was the heart of that home, with friends and family dropping in from dawn to dusk.
The Bridge Series by Swiss designer Anthony Guex has human-scaled proportions and fits into urban lofts as easily as salt box houses. The contemporary collection presents an appreciation of the ‘super normal’ with quiet aesthetics that prioritize utility and tranquility desirable in modern life. Connecting past to present to future, each piece features wide horizontal slats inspired by Fogo Island’s vernacular structures.
Made using ethically grown and regionally sourced birch by our craftspeople in the Fogo Island Woodshop. Available in a range of finishes including hand-rubbed Danish Oil which creates an amber rich depth and White Oil which neutralizes the amber tone for a raw matte look. Both absorb into the wood and richen the grain. A variety of coloured painted lacquers are available. Custom colours, sizing and stacking chairs are available on request.
