Inspiration

The Newfoundland inshore fishery was seasonal and family-based: fishers went out daily in these boats, catching cod, before returning home, where the whole family would work together to split, salt, and dry the fish. For weeks, hundreds of fish would cover wooden flakes in the sun, becoming salt cod ready to trade.

On a visit to Fogo Island, German designer Sebastian Herkner was inspired by the history of fishery and the beauty and utility of the punt. He translated this history into the Fogo Boat, a vessel to carry your salt and pepper shakers to the table.

Fabrication

Made using regionally sourced yellow birch, by our craftspeople at Fogo Island Workshops. Designed with proportions similar to Fogo Island’s traditionally made punts, our team also utilized a stain recommended by local guitar maker, Peggy White.
