Inspiration

Toile de Jouy is a traditional French fabric that features monochromatic scenes printed in a single colour against a white background, usually depicting traditional bucolic scenes. Donna Wilson’s interpretation of this timeless fabric is Set the Scene, a visual narrative that offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of Fogo Island.

Wilson’s design includes images of Fogo Island wildlife; longliner and punt boats – both integral to the island’s fishing economy; iconic buildings like the Fisherman’s Union Trading Company Museum, located in the community of Seldom, and Fogo Island Arts’ Long Studio, located in Joe Batt’s Arm; and the bronzed statue of the Great Auk, a memorial sculptureb for the extinct bird.

Fabrication

All fabrics are hand-printed by our partner, Christopher Farr Cloth, in a UK print house on the outskirts of London. Using the most environmentally friendly pigment ink system available, Christopher Farr Cloth marries slow production methods and innovative painting techniques. The linen fabrics are sourced responsibly from suppliers that have been carbon-neutral since 2014 and all fabrics are finished with a sanforising process that uses heated rollers to soften the cloth after printing, for which there are no chemicals involved.
