The project to unearth the quilts of Fogo Island revealed a trove of knowledge and design that was not thought to be worth more than the functional warmth the quilts provided.
A Fogo Island fundamental is using and reusing all resources, an economy of materials. The Patchwork quilt is an inspiring example of this concept. Piecing together scarps with an anarchy of colour and pattern the realized quilt comes together in a cohesive whole. The design stays true to the concept of Outport Aesthetics; the ability to express the maker’s individuality and flourish while ignoring conventional rules.
